How to cure boredom in 10 easy steps

81

By Hawkesdream

When I saw this request , I thought to myself, I can do that. When I started to think about it , I thought to myself, this isn't as easy as one thinks.

There are many reasons for being bored, the first one is having nothing to do. Having nothing to do! I have been bored and wondered round the house and all those little things , like , that cupboard could do with a paint...........paint is flaking ,better give a touch up........Jack's wardrobe needs a sort out..........that brass clock could do with a clean........excetera excetera excetera..do I do them ,no, why, because I am bored.

I know , I'll do some gardening! better survey the realm first..weeds, yes.......long grass, yes.....peat,yes.......plants, yes....so much to do, do I do them ,no , why, because I am bored.

Ah hah, I will visit my friend, I havn't seen her in a while be good for a catch up, plenty of diesel , that's what I'll do....Upstairs, what shall I wear, I don't know ,can't do that anyway..Why, because I am bored.

Hey! how about a drive, I like to drive, plenty of diesel...look at the weather, raining again, thats not much fun, think I'll give it a miss , why, because I am bored.

I could go on for a very long time, listing things to do, but none of it will help, why, because I am bored.

Boredom ,then, has absolutely nothing to do , with the lack of things to do. Personally, I think it has everything to do with your state of mind.

Personally, I recognize boredom as the onset of an oncoming depression, this of course , is not true for everyone, children get bored for instance but that is easily overcome with the ingenuity of a parent, teenagers get bored, mainly through not having the financial wherewithall to do what they want, nor the age , to realize that not everything depends on money.  Then there are those , that do whatever they want, and still get bored , through not being able to think of anything new to do.

For me, as I said , it's the onset of depression. I am quite lucky really, to be able to recognize this as it saves me weeks of despair.  And, I deal with it , as follows:

I give myself , me time. My work still has to be done and when I get out my tea cup with ,'Time for Me ' written upon it, I am given a wide berth and allowed to find my way back out.  My second port of call is a stop by the sea, here ,I watch the water and drink the air, Time passes and I clear my mind before leaving. The music playing is always Classical , and it plays until I hear the piece that brings the tears, don't ask why ,but it helps.

When I get back home, I have a long soak in the bath and wash away the troubles, the rest of the day I spend doing absolutely nothing, nothing unless I choose to, generally I will even fall asleep, I speak to no-one and am a virtual recluse , but I find it works, could be a day , could be two, but certainly it works and it saves the heartache that could have been.

So, What's the solution to Boredom? Who knows? All I know is that if you are content with whatever you choose to do, and happy..Why be bored?

I myself turn to drugs and alcohol when I'm bored, but I don't suggest it for anyone else, I would recommend getting on hubpages though

Hi Hawkesdream, you tackled a difficult subject here - for me boredom is when I cannot muster up any interest, even in something that usually interest me. All I know it that I need to do something completely different at that point - it usually works.

Hawkesdream profile image

Hawkesdream Hub Author 3 years ago

Think maybe it's a human default, could do with a deeper understanding as to why and how. Maybe I will give some deeper consideration to this matter.

Thanks for answering my request, Hawkesdream. I think you've hit the nail on the head here. Boredom is almost when you have too many things you need to do, but can't get up the motivation to get started and you procrastinate. So you say you are bored and find other things to do but still don't tackle the important things!

Hawkesdream profile image

Hawkesdream Hub Author 3 years ago

Exactly, it's the distraction factor of our lives.

I often try to engage myself into something to avoid boredom. When I have now work to do, I just log on to the internet and read hubs or articles on the internet.

Oh yes, I do now, now that I have caught the bug, you do too? isn't it great?

Hawkesdream, you certainly triggered a response with this hub, I suffer from boredom very regularly but I always work on it and eventually I find a solution, be it only a temporary one.

Wish I had understood such things years ago.

Hi katyzzz, the more I think about it , the more I believe that boredom is a state of mind , Thanks for dropping in.

Woot great response Hawkesdream...people who get bored need to use their imagination a little more.Heck I am so busy, that it would be nice to get bored occassionally as then it would mean I have absolutely nothing to do looool, fat chance ....xx

Hawkesdream profile image

Hi blondepoet, thats the only advantage, time for yourself, but then you wouldn't know what to do and you would be fed up.

Great hub Hawkesdream. I believe you hit the nail on the head too with showing that even when we have plenty to do, repetitiveness and tedium can set in. Maybe that's why hubpages is so exciting. There are so many new topics to check out, interesting new subjects to research and share - it takes us out of "routine".

Loneliness and boredom could easily lead to depression and anxiety. Many may get addicted to alcohol and smoking. This blog is a eye opener for such kind of persons.

I agree with dolores, I try to not be bored by taking walks, meeting a friend for coffee, going to a museum or movie, book store, visiting a relative, etc. And than sometimes I just like to sit back, relax watch tv and ok with that too. Thanks!!

Madison, first off, thanks for the e-mail, much appreciated. Relieving boredom is to do something, anything and it will soon lift.

What about using your lover's thighs as earmuffs when you're bored? THAT will cure depression, too for a little bit anyway.

wsp2469, I think you are missing the point.

Thanks for the idea anyway, I am sure that many here will appreciate it.

To tell the truth, I was browsing through the first 25 pages of so-called best hubs. I only stopped to comment on the few that were at least a little bit interesting. So, while I might have been a bit silly with my response you can at least take some comfort in the fact that I found something interesting in your hub, okay?

Hawkesdream profile image

wsp2469, I am sorry, I do appreciate you coming to call and commenting.

Yesterday, my computer was playing silly buggers and the last thought was using my lovers legs as earmuffs..lol

Do hope we cross each others path again.

I'm sorry I missed this one before. Personally I write a poem when I start feeling down, or maybe I write a story or something making fun of my situation. When I was a kid I used to go down by Lake Superior and listen to the waves. Thank you, Hawkesdream!

Allison, you are right on target with this one. There is always something to do. Boredom = depression. I think in young children, boredom goes with watching to much TV and being to involved with electronic screenage.

Thank you Dolores, sometimes I hit the target lol. I agree about the children too, it seems than many just dont know how to play.

boredom leads to low out the confidence ....

sometimes habit of unwillingness also leads to boredom ....

Hawkesdream profile image

You are correct sexyjonty, try using to your advantage, have some thought time,it will then cease to be boredom and become a positive move.

Randomness 2 years ago

I find that i've had a low confidence for a while, an being bored all the time just isn't helping, an its also making me get irritated by slight things, but its all just a lack of motivation, usualy helps to have friends come round or to see them but they're usualy busy with work or college.

Madison22 profile image

Hey Hawkesdream, I also always find there is something to do. No such thing as boredom in my list because as mentioned it can surely lead to depression and that is one thing I can't afford. Awesome hub!! Thank you!!

Yes, well spotted... in my experience, many depressed people are bored. There is a feeling of overwhelm in the demand of things to do, combined with a guilt over the non-action that causes an inner stalemate. This conflict is a sure sign there is underlying depression. As you stated, its important to be kind to oneself, (despite the guilt and oftentimes, self-loathing). Although I have found that people who are bored, can't or won't do things that will make them feel better and dig the hole deeper. I think reading hubs like this one, help 'bored and depressed' people understand the condition and helps them to learn self-compassion and self-care without paying heed to the internal negative dialogue. Your hub helps 'catch' the symptom we call 'bored' before it becomes full-blown depression.

Anonymous Youngster 21 months ago

Neat...I've been bored lately myself, But I'm not depressed lol. Well I'm doing something from August 20th to August 22, Celebrate Dad's birthday at the festival, Watch Pirahna 3D (Oooh!) And go to one of my bud's 4th b-days! WOOT!

Hawkesdream profile image

Hawkesdream Hub Author 16 months ago

Your housework can wait, just do little things at a time, if your husband gets annoyed, just tell him that you wont stand in his way if he wants to help.

Losing your temper with your daughter is not acceptable, she is not to blame, nor will she understand. Spend time doing fun stuff with her, she can help you to be happy.

madam 9 months ago

boredom certainly is a roadblock sometimes, but i certainly disagree that a person should turn to stuff like drugs n alcohol, they r bad. N bad stuff can never yield good results.Just a sincere advice, my job is done.

Mummy21 8 months ago

Ive been diagnosed with depression and can really relate to this 'boredom' topic which I think is quite obvious as I am reading all these comments.

It is almost comforting to see i'm not the only one going through this although I do not wish it upon anyone.

I myself have a small toddler and a puppy, the puppy is what i've recently bought as my partner works nights so I feel very lonely and thought he would perhaps bring me some company. This hasnt worked yet but im sticking with it.

I have also started smoking again after I had quit for 3 and a half years.

None of which has helped to date but this boredom thing is driving me insane. All my friends and family that I seem to be close too also have families of their own so visitors in the evening are very far and few between which is obviously unfair.

I have been at the in laws house untill gone 2200 at night with my little girl of 19 months just to avoid going home. On the other hand I feel so awfull that im keeping her up but I feel sometimes I have to for my own sanity. Those of you with young families yourself probably understand money is always on issue and creating your own fun these days seems so hard.

I want the best for my little girl she is my whole world and I try so hard but sometimes I just dont feel like im good enough on times because I have no motivation when she should have 100% of my attention.

Sorry to write an essay but it feels quite good to be able to get all this down :)

Thanks xx

Mummy21..there are online places that u can go to for help with depression if you want to remain anonymous..you shouldn't suffer alone..try to reach out to your family members or friends..i know sometimes it's not easy to reach out to people and tell them how you're feeling..but if they love you and they're true friends they should be there for you..hope you come out of this soon so you can enjoy your little girl..life is precious and short..good luck to ya.

If you are in the position where your scenario is a reality. I would have a long soak in the bath and take myself to bed. Sleep will bring a new time and the emotions that you are experiencing will be lessened. Awake to a new frame of mind.

I found this to be a good article but I have yet to test it but since I live in the tiny useless town in Iowa I can not stay interested in anything and I have no sea to look at or things to enjoy or money to go places to becomes less bored.

One thing that I believe is really good to do to change your boredom is to read books. Just start reading and keep reading. Not only will you become smarter but you will travel all over the place. I have been reading The Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien and I have traveled miles upon miles in my mind and seen all sorts of woods, rivers, mountains, caves, etc.

Another suggestion that I would give you is to try self-talk as well. A good book I would suggest is "What to say when you talk to yourself" By Shad Helmstetter.
